Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a herb with a long tradition of use in European herbalism dating back to the Middle Ages. These uses included memory enhancement and support of other cognitive deficits (Kennedy 2006, review). While the mechanism of action for these effects is yet to be fully uncovered, sage extracts have been shown to inhibit acetyl-cholinesterase; an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Sage has also been shown to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and estrogenic properties. A number of clinical trials of different sage extracts conducted between 2004 and 2006 demonstrated sage’s cognitive enhancing effects for primary, secondary, and working memory when administered acutely to both healthy young and elderly volunteers.
Sibelius sage ™ stands alone as a unique extract. Grown in Hampshire, England, this material is uniquely identifiable when compared by spectroscopy and pattern recognition to other sage materials available. Sibelius sage ™ has also been tested using the patented Chronoscreen™ technology. In vivo, Sibelius sage™ at a dose of 333mg input (herbal equivalent 2.5g dose) may be beneficial in the enhancement of aspects of cognition in healthy older people and may even help reverse the effects of some types of secondary memory loss in older people.
